🥾 Trip Description
Exmoor is one of the UK’s most varied and untouched national parks, where ancient woodland, open moorland, dramatic coastline and hidden river valleys exist side by side. Across the weekend we experience a constantly changing landscape, with each day bringing a completely different style of scenery and hiking.
The walking is varied rather than technical, combining steady climbs, undulating coastal trails, peaceful woodland paths and panoramic moorland viewpoints. There is plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, relax with the group and take in the remote atmosphere that makes Exmoor feel so different from much of southern England.
Away from the hiking, the trip also offers a rare chance to properly disconnect from busy city life. Evenings are spent back at our remote private hostel enjoying group meals, relaxing with fellow hikers and soaking up the peaceful surroundings deep in the National Park.
📅 Itinerary
Friday – Arrival
Arrive at our Exclusively Hired remote accommodation deep within Exmoor National Park. Settle in, meet your fellow hikers and enjoy a relaxed first evening surrounded by moorland and countryside.
Saturday – Tarr Steps circular
• Distance: 17km (11 miles)
• Grading: Intermediate, a few hills, some tough terrain
• Ascent: 460m
• Hiking time: 4 - 5 hours
Today we explore one of Exmoor’s hidden gems – the beautiful River Barle valley and the famous Tarr Steps, the longest clapper bridge in the UK and believed to be around 3,000 years old.
Our route follows crystal clear rivers through ancient oak woodland rich in mosses, lichens and wildlife, with peaceful riverside scenery, rolling hills and beautiful woodland trails throughout the day.
We return to the hostel in the late afternoon with time to enjoy our remote surroundings before a relaxed group dinner together.
Sunday – Lynmouth Circular
• Distance: 15km (9 miles)
• Grading: Intermediate, a few hills
• Ascent: 550m
• Hiking time: 4.5 - 5.5 hours
Today we hike one of the most spectacular stretches of the South West Coast Path, taking in dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline and sweeping ocean views high above the sea.
Our route winds along the stunning Exmoor coastline before looping inland towards the picturesque coastal villages of Lynton and Lynmouth. Along the way there is a good chance of spotting the area’s famous feral goats amongst the rocky cliffs.
In the evening we return to the hostel for a relaxed barbecue and another social evening in our remote countryside setting.
Monday – Dunkery Beacon circular - the highest point in Exmoor
• Distance: 10km (7 miles)
• Grading: Intermediate
• Ascent: 430m
• Hiking time: 3 to 3.5 hours
Our final hike takes us across the wild upland landscapes surrounding Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in Exmoor National Park at 519 metres.
We hike through open moorland, quiet woodland and heather-covered hillsides with expansive views stretching across Exmoor and out towards the sea. This remote landscape is one of the best places in southern England to spot red deer and Exmoor ponies roaming freely across the hills.
At the summit we stop to soak up the panoramic scenery before descending and beginning our journey home.

• Visit Denbies Wine Estate — England’s largest vineyard and award winner
• Cross the iconic Stepping Stones on the River Mole

For centuries, the beauty of Box Hill has inspired artists, writers and musicians. Jane Austen set a scene from Emma here, George Lambert painted it in 1733 (now in Tate Britain), and it has even featured in modern songs. The poet Keats and G.K. Chesterton also drew inspiration from these hills, showing how this corner of Surrey has long captured creative imaginations. Our hike begins in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with woodland and rolling trails through Norbury Park before joining the twisting roads used in the 2012 Olympic cycling race. From here, we climb to the summit of Box Hill, where the Salomons Memorial viewpoint offers sweeping panoramas across the Weald and as far as Devil’s Dyke by the South Coast. On the way we also encounter traces of history, including a late 19th-century fort built to defend against French invasion and the semi-ruined folly tower from 1815.
After soaking up the views, we descend to the River Mole and cross its famous Stepping Stones, a much-loved landmark of the area. The trail then continues through open chalk downland and woodland before reaching Denbies Wine Estate, the largest vineyard in England, winner of international awards including Best Rosé in the World at the 2010 International Wine Challenge.
A wonderfully varied hike that blends chalk downs, riverside beauty, iconic views and layers of history — all within easy reach of London.

• A serious physical challenge for fit and fast hikers🥾 Hike Description
We begin from Hassocks and head south, leaving the valley to climb onto the chalk heights of the South Downs. Quiet lanes and green byways lead us to the quaint village of Ditchling, before the trail steepens toward Ditchling Beacon — one of the South East’s loftiest points. From here, the panorama opens wide: the Weald to the north and the English Channel growing larger to the south. From the high ground we thread through rolling downs and woodland pockets, turning toward Stanmer Park. We pass Stanmer House and the historic village, then continue via the University of Sussex at Falmer. Cresting the ridgeline by Brighton Racecourse and Whitehawk Hill, we traverse species-rich grassland with sweeping views over the city and sea.
Our finale is a descent into Brighton, finishing on the lively seafront. We’ll have around 50–70 minutes to explore: wander the Lanes with live buskers, dip a toe in the sea, try the zip wire, or round things off with classic fish and chips on the beach.
TOUGHNESS WARNING - this is a tough and hilly hike and is also long. You need to be an experienced and fit hiker. It is not for beginners or anyone who has only done intermediate hikes.
To be fair to those attending, if you are unable to keep up with the group or finish the hike, you will need to leave the hike and get a taxi at your own expense. Our pace will average 4 to 4.2kmph.
At over 500m ascent, it is 2/3 of the ascent of Mount Snowdon from Pen Y Pass - the most popular start point.
If you have any doubts at all then this is not a hike to join, please choose one of our less tough hikes. If you are unsure, email us, but anyone who cannot keep up with the group will need to leave the hike and no refund will be due - only sign up if you are happy with this.🧭 Guide:

• Finish in Eastbourne — England’s sunniest town
• Explore the South Downs National Park — the newest in the UK🥾 Hike Description
This is Outdooraholics’ most popular hike, a dramatic and exhilarating journey across the chalk cliffs of Sussex that we have been leading for over 12 years. The Seven Sisters are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs shaped over thousands of years by natural erosion processes. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes. We begin in the coastal town of Seaford, home to a Napoleonic-era Martello Tower built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air.
Our route follows the South Downs Way, passing through Birling Gap and past the striking Belle Tout Lighthouse, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is Beachy Head, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below.
We finish in Eastbourne, statistically England’s sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with refreshments in a local pub.

There are sheer drops off the cliffs and some of these soft chalk cliffs are crumbling at the edges with chunks regularly falling and no fencing in place.
