For add'l details/full schedule go to GSU Physics-Astro, HLCO

Stargazing, 8:30pm – 10:30pm at Hard Labor Creek Observatory (HLCO).

The Georgia State University Department of Physics and Astronomy delights in opportunities to offer stargazing to the public, as well as professional and amateur astronomers!

HLCO is located in the middle of Hard Labor Creek State Park, in Rutledge, GA, 50 miles east of GSU campus, is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the Dept of Physics & Astronomy at Georgia State University.

Staffed by GSU astronomers, free event, parking limited, carpooling highly encouraged.

HLCO is a resource for GSU astronomers to take advantage of the dark skies, away from the light pollution in nearby cities, to observe objects as near as the Moon and as far away as the edge of our visible Universe.

This rsch facility includes (and is subject to inclement weather):

  • Miller Telescope: Plane Wave 24″ Corrected Dall-Kirkham Astrograph Telescope
  • McAlister Telescope: RC Optics 20″ Ritchey-Chrétien Telescope
  • Wingert Building: Celestron 11″ Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope

Note: Public Open House often attracts significant crowds (50+ ppl), the telescope domes and rooms are relatively enclosed spaces, access to the domes requires going up a steep flight of stairs using handrails, stargazing with an array of small telescopes requires visitors and staff to take turns touching the instruments with hands and/or faces; staff need to constantly re-adjust the pointing and calibration of each telescope throughout the night.
