1+ miles slow walking for ca. 2.25 hours. Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15-Oct 15) is a perfect time for a walk through the many colorful murals and mosaics of Spanish (AKA East) Harlem. They reveal so much about the history, culture, and politics of this neighborhood and its residents. Some artworks are dedicated to accomplished citizens of New York and beyond. Others have strong political messages. Still others include lush scenery of the tropical places that so many residents of this neighborhood came from. Meet 1:30 PM outside 1st Spanish United Methodist Church, 163 E 111th St., at Lexington Avenue. Nearest subway: #6 to 110th. End near E. 103rd Street and Lex. Steady rain cancels.
