Details
Saturday, Oct 25, 2025
10:30 am (promptly) – 1:00 pm (approximately)
Manhattan
How to Find Us: Meet in Kimlau Square, a public plaza (under reconstruction) at the intersection of several streets, including East Broadway, Bowery and Worth St. Closest subway stops are East Broadway (F train), Chambers St (J and Z), City Hall (N, R, W), Brooklyn Bridge (4, 5, 6) and Park Place (2 and 3). Closest public toilets are in Columbus Park (Mulberry and Bayard streets) and Chatham Square Library (33 East Broadway).
Limited to 25 walkers. $5 for non-members of the Outdoors Club.
NOTE: The Bowery, Manhattan’s oldest street, has undergone one of the city’s most dramatic transformations. The days when “Bowery” was synonymous with Skid Row are long gone, although a few vestiges of that era do remain. Pricey hotels and condos, architectural extravaganzas, and chic art galleries are now common. This walk takes in all of that, along with historic homes, beautiful old commercial buildings, grand monuments, defaced landmarks, remnants of Kleindeutschland, and a venerable academic institution.
The walk covers a little more than one mile and ends in Cooper Square, near the Astor Place subway (6 train) and many other MTA stations. There’s no formal lunch stop, but Cooper Square is a good place for an al fresco mid-day meal. Cooper Square is also home to NYU’s Grey Art Museum (free admission), which has a show worth seeing.
