A Bounty of Beauty On and Off Lower Fifth Ave
Wednesday Aug 12, 2026 — Noon--3 pm
Manhattan
DETAILS
The blocks on and off Fifth Ave between 13th and 9th streets present a micro-history of NYC architecture. They were also home to celebrated figures who contributed to the city's culture and politics. We'll take close looks at those people and places while also visiting two historic churches and a 150-year-old art gallery. The walk includes stops at a tiny cemetery and the site of a notorious explosion.
We'll proceed at a moderate pace, zig-zagging between University Place and Sixth Ave. There aren't any parks along the two-mile route, so it's best to eat lunch prior to the walk. We will pause in an air-conditioned space that has toilets available.
How to Find Us: Meet in the shade near the George Washington equestrian statue at the southern end of Union Square. Several subway lines stop at the Union Square station. The walk ends at W 9th St and Sixth Ave, a short distance from the W 4th St station where the A, C, D, E, F and M trains stop.
$5 for non-members of the Outdoors Club and guests of members.
