Halloween Treat! Walking through Rockville Centre & Hempstead Lake
Details
Pre-snacking on Halloween candy? Walk it off! 6 mile walk from Rockville Centre, LI and around Hempstead lake. Saturday, October 31st.
Join me on a delightful (approximate 6 mile walk) through the suburb town of Rockville Centre, Long Island, we’re we will pause to look at a few historic places, and admire the Halloween decorated homes. Once we reach Hempstead park, we’ll begin our autumnal walk through the woods and around Hempstead lake. On the way back, we will visit (now confirmed) Phillips house, a historic home that has photos and ephemera from the old days. Continue onwards to Rockville Centre train station, and return home.
Some things to be aware of:
- Meet at 10:20am on the Rockville Centre LIRR train platform.
From Penn station, take the 9:42am which arrives in RC at 10:20am. $22.50 for a day ticket. You can check the LIRR schedule here
From Jamaica train station (I'll be leaving from here): Take the 10:04am train (Babylon train). Watch the digital signs for the platform.
1a. Consider downloading TrainTime app and you will see the times, platforms and you can even buy your train ticket! - Pack a lunch and water. (We will pass a deli on our way. Probably best if you want to buy a drink or a snack.) Of course, Halloween candy is welcome to be shared!
- We’ll be walking on sidewalks and on a fairly flat wooded path. Good walking shoes are recommended.
- End time of 3pm is only approximate. Afternoon train returns from Rockville Centre: 2:51pm/3:22pm/3:51pm, etc. Again refer to the Trainapp or online. (Pop into the Front Street bakery before you leave Rockville, the baked goods are amazing!)
- You can always drop-out of the walk early if you wish, but make sure you can navigate on your own using GoogleMaps.
- Weather: Steady rain cancels. Cloudy weather is no problem. If the walk is cancelled, I’ll make an announcement on Friday. Otherwise the walk is on!
- Note: Non-members of the Outdoors Club, I will collect $5 from you. This money gets sent to the Club to defray various costs.
Hope that answers most questions. Thanks!
