As part of Outlink’s Pride programming, we will be hosting a workshop series that discusses our theme of Gay Wrongs. This workshop is presented in partnership with Ikamostiipi - Queer Kinship Collective. Ikamotsiipi provides program facilitation on 2SLGBTQ+ experiences, with a focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
The workshop will consist of two sessions on August 26th and August 27th, both two hours long. We will expand on our theme with a historical look at the relationship between law enforcement and 2SLGBTQ+ communities using a mix of interactive activities, group discussions, and opportunities for self-reflection. With a focus on the experiences of QTBIPOC, we will discuss how our bodies have been policed geographically and historically, and how we are still affected by policing today. We will also post workshop materials in advance for anyone to access before and after the event.
The workshops will take place in Central Library (800 3 Street SE). The outside east elevator is staffed by intercom and available 24 hours a day, allowing for easy passage through the archway, connecting people between East Village and City Hall. On the west side, there is an intercom at the doors near the Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall. Visitors with mobility challenges can use this intercom to contact security in order to use these doors. Or, continue up the sloped walkway to reach the main entrance. Once inside, there are elevators, sloped walkways, and stairways for visitors to move throughout the building. Elevators have braille buttons and an audible elevator signal, and stairs have tactile indicators on the railings, and on the floor at the top of the flight. For more information on building accessibility, visit the CPL website.
- Day 1 (Friday, August 26th, 2:30 - 4:30 PM): Meeting Room 0-13
- Day 2 (Saturday, August 27th, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM): Room 3-16B
Room locations and times are subject to change. Stay tuned for more details, including the full agenda. Live-streaming will be available for both sessions.
To register for the workshop, please visit our Eventbrite page here to purchase tickets! Please note that an RSVP to this Meetup event will not guarantee your spot. We are only selling a limited number of tickets for the in-person program due to room capacity limits.
There are three options for ticket purchases: pay-what-you-can, general admission, and livestream only. Pay-What-You-Can are tickets sold on a sliding scale where you can select what amount you wish to pay. We want this event to be accessible to all who are interested and no one will be turned away due to a lack of funds. General admission is the suggested price for tickets $15 for both days, for a total of $30. Livestream Only are tickets for people interested in participating virtually, via livestream. These tickets are free and the livestream link will be sent out closer to the date of the event. Please select the option that you are most comfortable with. Proceeds will be split among Calgary Outlink and Ikamotsiipi for fundraising.
If there are any barriers to accessing this event, or if you have any questions, please contact Grace: grace@calgaryoutlink.ca.
As with the nature of what we’re discussing, topics will touch on racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and violence against Indigenous communities. We encourage participants to take care of themselves and take breaks as often as they need to, and we will be operating under Outlink’s Safer Space Ground Rules. Both Outlink staff and Ikamotsiipi will be available for an hour after each session to debrief. While this event is open to everyone in the community, we encourage folks who hold more privilege to examine their biases before they choose to participate.
