Circular Green Walk from Chingford to Hangman's Hill + (optional) Pub

Details

The famous Hangman's Hill earned its name for allegedly being the site of a hanging - but that is not why it's famous. Drivers who park on a sloped slip road heading up the hill will notice something very mysterious. If you park your car at the foot of the hill and leave the handbrake off, the car will roll uphill. And it feels quite strange on foot too.

So we're doing a circular green walk from Chingford Station to that very hill, going via Daws Hill and circling back a different way. We'll find a nice place for a coffee en route.

We're meeting outside Chingford Station at 11am, and will be leaving fairly promptly.

The Central Line is out today between Leytonstone and Hainault, Leytonstone and Epping. If you are coming from the Hainault/Barkingside area, you can come with me in the car, or ask me how to get there on public transport.

Ilford/Gants Hill is either a 179 bus all the way, or the Elizabeth Line. Woodford/Loughton area is easy on the bus, with either the 179 or 397.

We'll be ending the walk in the pub around 3.30pm. Those not coming to the pub can hop off back at the station.

For those who have not paid for July, I ask for a nominal contribution of £2 to help cover Meetup organiser fees. Or you can pay £4 to last you through July. No shrapnel please.

For drivers, park in Beresford Rd and use the footpath between number 25 and 29 to go to the station. The postcode for that point of the road is E4 6ED.

If you're on the train, its the London Overground (now known as the Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. You can go from Stratford if you go over the internal bridge at Hackney Central to Hackney Downs for a train change.

The 97 bus goes from Stratford Station too (via Leyton & Walthamstow). Careful though, as end to end takes nearly an hour. Chingford station is also served by buses 179, 212, 397, 444. The 179 is very useful for a lot of people, going through Ilford, Gants Hill, South Woodford & Woodford.
