Presentation: The Security Salary Conversation: Career Growth, Compensation, and Negotiation in AppSec

Most AppSec professionals spend years learning how to secure software, influence engineering teams, and manage risk — but very little time learning how to manage their own careers.
This talk explores the often-unspoken side of Application Security: compensation, negotiation, career positioning, and long-term growth. We’ll discuss how AppSec roles are valued inside organizations, how to think about market compensation, common mistakes security professionals make during negotiations, and how to grow your career skills with your technical skills.
The goal is not “get rich quick” advice. It’s helping security professionals become more intentional, informed, and confident about their careers in a rapidly changing industry.

Bankim Tejani is an experienced Application Security practitioner and security leader who has spent years working with engineering organizations to build security & privacy in from the beginning. His background spans AppSec, cloud security, DevSecOps, and security program development across fast-moving technology environments.
He has been part of the OWASP Austin community since 2009, including LASCON, where he continues to serve as a volunteer and MC/host.
