Mass Surveillance & Journalism

Details
Recently the Right to Know Campaign (R2k) released a report on South African Journalists under surveilance: https://www.r2k.org.za/wp-content/uploads/R2K-Surveillance-of-Journalists-Report-2018-web.pdf This sparked some discussion between the organisers of OWASP Cape Town, as we had discussed this topic before. Timo Goosen will discuss Online Privacy within the context of Mass Surveillance, Journalism and South Africa. Invite friends who are not technical or journalists as privacy should be a cause we all fight for. Historically South African journalists have fought for our right to know, is this right under threat?
This event will be a ideal for non-technical individuals as well (might contain some technical discussions, but much lighter than usual). These types of talks are ideal for journalists, activists, etc. as we attempt to create awareness around the dangers of Mass Surveillance; as well as incidents were its turned against Journalists. Bring your own experiences, thoughts and counter-arguments and lets make this an interesting discussion around safety vs privacy. Sign up and invite a friend too!
We would also like to suggest supporting the Right2Know Campaign in which every way you can, as they fight for "freedom of expression and access to information". Also support the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that defends "civil liberties in the digital world": https://www.eff.org/about
