Abstract:
Open Source Software is Federally Included in Canada with Katie McMillan
This talk aims to summarize how the Government of Canada includes open source software in terms of including it in key policies, directives, and tools, as well including key groups, departments, and people. It also seeks to include important historical considerations.
Can You Not? How to Avoid Destroying Prod with Agent Permissions with Robert Babaev
LLMs are very tenacious in that they will do almost anything to achieve their goals! . . . including nuking production. Together we'll work through why agents do this, how permissions work on a handful of different harnesses like Claude Code, Cursor, and OpenCode, and how you can hopefully avoid your next agent crashing production. Again.
Speakers:
Katie McMillan is an enthusiast and evangelist for open-source software. Her interests include applications, operating systems, and broader topics such as standards, interoperability, quality, and community building.
She has been active in many areas of open-source software, including serving in roles on several boards and contributing to open-source software projects.
Most recently, Katie serves as Secretary for Software in the Public Interest and is a member of the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome.
Robert Babaev is a recent graduate of Carleton University with an Honours Bachelor of Computer Science, specializing in Computer and Internet Security. He has done multiple internships at major Canadian cyber companies like Barracuda Networks and Software Secured, research into authentication and access control frameworks, and competed internationally in Athens and Prague in competitions through CyberSci. Robert also regularly engages in side projects including CourseFull, an app built to help students track their academic goals without the guesswork.
