DDoS: How can something so cheap be so expensive?

Details

Come along to our next OWASP Wellington Meetup, all about DDoS attacks!

# The Talk

Ransom notes, innovative attacks, stock exchanges being disrupted, spy agencies, war rooms…this sounds like a movie plot, not what you would expect to happen in New Zealand!

This talk covers a defender's experience and the lessons you can learn protecting a range of NZ financial institutions from an effective and sustained DDoS campaign. It will dive into the risks you face operating web facing services, the costs to run attacks, and what you can do to prepare for an attack and effectively defend yourself.

We will kick off with snacks and mingle time from 5:30pm, with the talk starting at 6pm.

# Our Speaker

Jerome Van Rooijen’s day job is shielding the internet from bad guys™. Previously network engineer, risk consultant, general infosec/risk peep. Always keen for fishing tips/trips.

Disclaimer: this isn't a vendor pitch! While Jerome works at RedShield, just like our organiser Kirk works at RedShield, and it'll be hosted like most of our meetups at RedShield, Jerome won't be trying to sell you RedShield (unless you really want to have that conversation with him afterwards).

# COVID Stuff

If Wellington is at Level 2 or above, we'll postpone. If you are unwell, please do not attend. We'll be happy to see you at a later meetup! There will not be a live streamed option, unfortunately.
