The Institute for Ethical AI (Oxford Brookes University) is hosting a virtual online event focusing on the topic “Barriers to AI Enabled Technologies in Clean Growth”.

4 speakers with expertise in the area will be presenting on a panel.

It will be a great opportunity to learn, share and discuss knowledge on AI in Clean Growth, Built Environment, Green Tech, Sustainability, and AI in general.

The event will be held on Thursday the 24th of February 2022 from 18:00 to 20:00.

A Zoom link will be sent in the days before the event.

Anyone who is interested is welcome to join!

The Speakers Include:

Dr Tjeerd olde Scheper - a Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering, Computing, and Mathematics at Oxford Brookes University (UK). His research is in Dynamic Systems and he is particularly interested in the manner in which Biological Systems resolve problems in dynamics, and in learning to apply those concepts to Engineering, Health, and Medical problems. He developed and patented a control method called Rate Control of Chaos, which limits the nonlinear dynamics of complex control problems into stable control domains with wide ranges of application in control of Wind turbines, Bioreactors and Engine control. He also created a method for nonlinear data representation Criticality Analysis that allows improved machine learning performance and the analysis of dynamic biological data.

Mr. Paul Massara - holds a number of Non- Executive roles including the Chair of Sovereign Housing, Chair of Utonomy, and Board advisor to a number of energytech start-ups. In addition to these roles he is also member of the Committee on Fuel Poverty at BEIS. He also works with Said Business School, Oxford University, as a mentor and advisor for their Creative Destruction Lab. Prior to his current roles, he was CEO of RWE npower and served on the Executive Committee of RWE AG as well as being the Country Chair for RWE in the UK responsible for all Government and policy issues. As member of the RWE Retail Board, he was responsible for coordinating 23 million B2C customers and led the digitalization of RWE in the UK and Europe. Before joining RWE , he held a variety of positions with increasing responsibility with Centrica plc, Direct Energy North America, in Toronto. His tenure there culminated in his role as President of Canadian Operations and serving as a Member of the North American Board and the North America Executive Committee. His leadership enhanced the Company’s growth from $700,000MM to $2.7Bn, and from 600 to 3,000 employees. He was voted Top 40 Under 40 in Canada in 2004 and was Chair of the Toronto Board of Trade. He holds both British and Canadian nationality.

Kevin Maynard - Co-director at the Institute for Ethical AI (Oxford Brookes University) who has developed expertise in risk, fairness and interpretability and applies this knowledge to the development of reasonable and balanced regulation of the AI and social media industries. Specifically he focuses on the impact of changes in the context and environment on the risk of using AI. His background comes from pharmaceutical research and bringing therapeutics and medical devices into clinical use, developing needle based devices for major companies such as AstraZeneca and Celltech. Many of the principles of medical product regulation are directly applicable to AI as the two situations can be modelled as managing black boxes ie systems where it is difficult to understand how the innerards work. Kevin thus applies this knowledge directly into his work on AI and Social Media.

We look forward to seeing you there!
