Our Topic: Education not indoctrination: the Curriculum and Assessment Review, JR87, and the case for inclusive education in schools.
Following the recommendation of the independent Curriculum and Assessment Review to place Religious Education (RE) on the national curriculum, and the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Northern Ireland on RE and collective worship, the case for inclusive education sits firmly at the forefront of current policy making. Looking at these, and also the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, Lewis will explore the implications for RE content, inclusive assemblies, and the place for humanism and non-religious world views in education. The talk will also look at the practical implications for schools and young people, and what reform could mean for social cohesion, understanding, and inclusive education.
Our Speaker: Lewis Young is Humanists UK's Education Campaigns Manager, and has been in the role since January 2024. His work covers Humanists UK's campaign work on faith schools (state-funded, private, or illegal), collective worship and Religious Education (RE). Prior to taking on this role Lewis was Communications and Campaigns Manager for a Member of Parliament. He is also a local councillor in Middlesbrough. We may even had to a pub afterwards for a post talk drink and put the world to rights!

Whether you're humanist, humanist-friendly, or just curious, please join us for our March Speaker Event. This is free to attend, but we ask that you register to confirm your place and help us manage numbers for catering. Donations to support the running of the Local Group are very welcome and can be made during registration, on the night in person, or online here.

About Oxford Humanists: The Oxford Humanists Local Group has a goal to bring non-religious people together to be happier, more fulfilled and to act as a force for good in our community. We have a growing social group and are keen to build upon this and support a full programme of social and educational events over the coming year. If you're keen on learning more about humanism, interested in volunteering for the local group, or simply wish to socialise with like-minded people, we would love to see you at this or any of our future events.
Please get in touch with our Events Manager if you have any questions, we'd love to hear from you at events-oxford@humanistbranches.uk .

We hope to see you there!
