Discussion: Moments on the Edge – Wild Tales and Other Short Films

Details
For this meetup, we will turn our attention to short films that pack intensity, humour, and social observation into compact storytelling. We will explore how different directors use brevity to heighten tension, expose social codes, and challenge us to see power and social interaction in new ways.
The Party (2016, Andrea Harkin): Set in Belfast during the summer of 1972, at the height of the Troubles, this BAFTA-nominated short follows a young man named Laurence who hosts a party for his cousin, Mickey, a man on the run. The film explores themes of young love and revelry, which are interrupted by the harsh realities of conflict and violence. – Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M23gp4ohrjE
Wild Tales/Relatos Salvajes (2014, Damián Szifron – selected segments): A darkly comic anthology from Argentina where ordinary frustrations explode into chaos. Each short film distills social pressure into moments of absurd escalation. – Watch on BFI Player (7-day free trial available).
Five Feet High and Rising (2000, Peter Sollett): A tender, street-level coming-of-age story shot in New York. Victor, a twelve year-old boy growing up on New York City's Lower East Side experiences what growing up is all about. – Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWILaFkIUbQ
