Join us for a discussion about Memories of Murder by Bong Joon-ho and The Night of the 12th by Dominik Moll, two films inspired by real criminal cases that offer distinct cinematic approaches to true crime: one grounded in social chaos and institutional failure, the other in procedural restraint and moral unease. Both confront us with the discomfort of stories that resist closure, asking what it means to seek justice when certainty remains out of reach.

Memories of Murder – 2003, Bong Joon Ho:
Set in rural South Korea in the 1980s, the film follows a team of detectives struggling to track down a serial killer targeting women. Based on South Korea’s first known serial murder case, Memories of Murder blends dark humour, procedural frustration and social critique. (Available on ITVX, BFI Player and Prime Video)

The Night of the 12th – 2022, Dominik Moll:
Inspired by a real unsolved case, the film centres on the murder of a young woman in the French Alps and the police investigation that follows. Calm and methodical, the film focuses on the accumulation of details, testimonies, and dead ends, as well as the emotional toll such cases take on those trying to solve them. (Available on Channel 4)
