Discussion: Women in Cannes - Atlantics and Anatomy of a Fall
Details
Join us to discuss the films Atlantics by Mati Diop and Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet. Notably, in the entire history of Cannes, only three women have ever won the prestigious Palme d'Or, and six women have taken home the Grand Prix. We are celebrating two of them in our June film club!
Atlantics (2019, Mati Diop): In a suburb of Dakar, a young woman deals with the sudden disappearance of her lover at sea, only for a mysterious fever to grip her community as the boys return in unexpected ways. Diop made history as the first Black woman filmmaker to have a film in the main competition and the first to win Cannes' Grand Prix. – Available on Netflix.
Anatomy of a Fall (2023, Justine Triet): A gripping French courtroom thriller that unravels the complexities of a marriage after a man is found dead in the snow below a chalet in France. Justine Triet is the thrid woman to win the coveted Palme d'Or in Cannes. – Available to rent on BFI Player.
