Discussion: Reinventing Berlin - Wings of Desire and Good Bye, Lenin!

Details

Join us for a discussion about Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders and Good Bye, Lenin! by Wolfgang Becker, delving into how both films reflect on memory and the emotional landscapes of a divided and reunified Berlin.

Wings of Desire (1987, Wim Wenders): Two angels roam Berlin, silently observing the lives of its inhabitants, offering invisible comfort but unable to truly engage in the human experience. When one angel falls in love with a lonely trapeze artist, he chooses to renounce his immortality. Through poetic black-and-white imagery and a meditative pace, the film reflects on the beauty and fragility of life and the weight of memory. – Available on BFI Player.

Good Bye, Lenin! (2003, Wolfgang Becker): In East Berlin, young Alex goes to extraordinary lengths to shield his ailing, socialist mother from the truth that the Berlin Wall has fallen and that their world has changed forever. As he stages an elaborate illusion of the GDR's continued existence, the film gently unpacks the absurdity, tenderness, and contradictions of a rapidly shifting society. – Available on BFI Player.
