June 13th OxfordRUG meeting on Bayesian Workflow

Details

We are very excited that Michael Betancourt (https://betanalpha.github.io) will be giving a talk in Oxford R user group during his visit to the UK. His talk will be on principled Bayesian workflow. If you don't know Michael, you should know that he is a Stan Core Developer and a very engaging presenter and teacher.

Agenda:

5:30 pm - 6.30pm: Towards a Principled Bayesian Workflow -- Michael Betancourt

After the event, some of us will head out for dinner with our speaker. You are welcome to join!

Towards a Principled Bayesian Workflow

Given a probabilistic model, Bayesian inference is straightforward; building a satisfactory model in a given application, however, is a far more open-ended challenge. In order to ensure robust analyses we need a principled workflow that guides the development of a probabilistic model that is consistent with both our domain expertise and any observed data while also being amenable to accurate computation. In this talk I will discuss recent work that advances a principled workflow for building and evaluating probabilistic models in Bayesian inference.

Michael Betancourt (https://betanalpha.github.io) is the principle research scientist with Symplectomorphic, LLC where he develops theoretical and methodological tools to support practical Bayesian inference. He is also a core developer of Stan, where he implements and tests these tools. In addition to hosting tutorials and workshops on Bayesian inference with Stan he also collaborates on analyses in epidemiology, pharmacology, and physics, amongst others. Before moving into statistics, Michael earned a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in physics.
