Abstract:

In this talk I will demonstrate how machine learning can get us closer to answering the age old question of causation vs correlation. Machine learning might seem like it is all about prediction but with the right assumptions it can be a useful tool for causal inference. I will use the packages sl3 and tmle3 packages from the tlverse and take you through all the steps and code needed to estimate the average treatment effect using targeted maximum likelihood estimation.

Speaker bio:

Emma is a part-time PhD student at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. She is interested in using electronic health care records to measure and improve antimicrobial drug use in children. She is an organiser for R-ladies London and sits on the NHS-R community technical advisory group. Emma is also a senior data analyst at the Health Foundation where she works on quantitative evaluations of healthcare interventions.
