OxfordRUG July 2023 | Teaching new learnRs

Details

For our next meetup on 3rd July, we are very excited to have Sam Dumble from Stats4SD giving a talk on "Teaching new learnRs"

Agenda:

6:00 pm: Talk "Teaching new learnRs" by Sam Dumble

7:00 pm: Pizza!

Abstract:

Over the past 7 years Stats4SD has been involved in introducing a range of different cohorts of MSc and PhD students to R, RStudio and the Tidyverse in the UK, Africa, and Latin America. Over this time our approach, and the content we cover, has changed dramatically. Some of this intentionally, where we have learnt what approaches did or did not worked well for different groups and through our own learning and usage of new teaching tools. Some of this forced upon us through circumstances outside our control when all teaching needed to move online during 2020. In this session Sam Dumble from Stats4SD will talk through some lessons he has learnt about effective strategies for teaching amd supporting new useRs – with a particular emphasis on demonstrating the use of interactive workbooks created through the learnR package.

Speaker bio:

Sam Dumble is a Senior Statistician with Statistics for Sustainable Development (https://stats4sd.org/). As an R user since 2006, he has seen the growth of R from a fairly niche academic programming language into the present day, where it is now used across a huge variety of applications and by a diverse global set of users. A large part of his role is in preparing and delivering training materials to introduce R and statistics more generally, to postgraduate students and early career researchers across a range of disciplines. Having had to take many courses where this material was taught very badly whilst a student or early in his career, he is passionate about ensuring new learners have a better experience of learning R.

Stats4SD is a not-for-profit, social enterprise founded in 2016 providing:
• Statistical and data management expertise;
• Support on research designs and methodology;
• Technical guidance related to collection and processing of data and information.
We work with teams across the world, providing our services to a global community of people working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
