Talk from Stuart Maine:
Gameplay and compulsion loops
In the rush to make content for your game it can be difficult to see how it all hangs together, which areas of the game are critical or superfluous, or even why players are enjoying the game at all. Veteran designer Stuart Maine looks at gameplay and compulsion loops, two useful tools for understanding the game you're making.
The talk will cover:
- Gameplay loops - Studying how players move through a game's 'states'.
- Compulsion loops - Asking what players want and what they can do to get it.
- Producing loop diagrams - Tools, techniques, what to include and to leave out.
- Case studies - Examples of loops in action and how they can be used.
Stuart Maine has been a game designer and writer for 28 years, working across console, PC and mobile. Stuart helped set up and later sell an independent studio, and has a wide range of experience with both original and licensed IP. In his spare time Stuart writes books on video games, and in his spare, spare time he tutors on a 'writing for video games' course. And, yes, he doesn't get enough sleep.
This event is organised and hosted by Humand Talent.
