Songwriters Open Mic Ann Arbor

Via Zoom, since 2020. Contact the Host for an updated Zoom link: jimnovakmusic AT gmail DOT com This is an online open mic for songwriters, meeting monthly since 1996, courtesy of Oz's Music in Ann Arbor. Performers are videotaped and the video of the entire session is sent to performers later the same evening. Each performer can play two or three original, acoustic songs (10-to-15 minutes, depending on the number of performers). The setting is supportive, and performers are encouraged to talk about their song --- eg how it came to be written, or what you were trying to do musically or lyrically, how it has changed over time, etc. In the Zoom era, songwriters have come from several dozen states, plus Canada, the UK, and Australia. The Host is Jim Novak, a singer-songwriter originally from Ann Arbor, now living in northern Virginia. There is also a YouTube channel with a collection of over 200 half-hour excerpts of the open mic; search YouTube for "songwriters open mic ann arbor."

This is an online open mic for COVER SONGS – and your ORIGINALS too, if you like. Anything goes. Come and do a short set of your favorites, your fascinations, your fooling-around-and-having-fun songs. Play a song that inspired you to write your own song, or one that inspires you now to write your next one. Play a guilty pleasure. Play one by a songwriter you think we should know about. Play one with your ideas for a riff or arrangement, or one where you’d like a little help in figuring things out. Each performer can play 2 or 3 songs / 10 -15 minutes, depending on the number of performers. An mp4 video of the entire evening is sent to performers via DropBox.
