VOLUNTEER with the Trail Stewards at PEEC - Camping and Trail Maintenance
Details
WE ARE THE 2021 VOLUNTEER GROUP OF THE YEAR
We are volunteering with the Trail Stewards and the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC). We help maintain the hiking trails in the Dingmans Ferry, PA area. We do this once every month from April through November. This is a fun and rewarding weekend with a great group of people. There are approximately 15-20 regulars that help out every month. Everyone is welcome and will feel right at home with this group.
NO SKILLS ARE REQUIRED and TOOLS AND TRAINING ARE PROVIDED
You only help with jobs you feel comfortable preforming. Just know your limits and come to help and have some fun. This is our 4th year helping and these are a list of tasks we've seen done on the trails.
- Built a new trail to a 2nd waterfall
- Trim branches hanging in the trails
- Remove fallen trees from the trails (trees are cut up for us already)
- Fill in holes of dirt from uprooted trees
- Build bridges over swampy areas
- Reroute trails based on storms that passed through the area
- Build steps / Waterbars / Check Steps
- Blow leaves off the trails
We usually go up Friday around 5 PM, setup camp, and go out to dinner. Saturday morning we meet at the tool shed directly behind the main PEEC building at 8:45 AM for a brief safety meeting, get the details of tasks to be completed, and split into groups. We work until around 3 PM and then head back to camp. There are showers available to get cleaned up. We have a family style dinner Saturday night with a specific dinner theme, then go up to the campfire for trail stories. I will UPDATE the dinner theme when it's decided and everyone can bring a small dish to share with the group. Sunday morning option of working 9 AM - noon, packing up and going home, or we sometimes plan a hike, bike, or kayak.
NEWCOMERS will be tent camping - Bring all your own gear (you do not need firewood) - Bathrooms and showers will be available.
PEEC will supply breakfast some mornings but not always. I will update this detail when I receive the group email from the PEEC members.
