Susquehanna River in Delta, PA - bluffs, swimming holes and a waterfall!
Details
This is one of the most interesting and scenic paddles you can find within an hour of Baltimore. The Conowingo and Holtwood dams essentially form a "lake" on this section of the river, with a (usually) mild enough current that we can paddle upstream and back to the same point. Along the way we'll pass through little summer island communities situated high up sheer bluffs. If the water level is low, we can make it upstream to the secret lunch spot. If we get significant rain this week, we'll turn around early and check out the waterfall and swimming hole on Muddy Creek. Total distance should about six miles in either case. We should arrive back at the put-in around 2:30pm, unless the swimming hole is especially lovely.
This event is suitable for SUPs, touring kayaks and canoes. Recreational kayaks are welcome, but you may have a tougher time fighting any breezes and currents. Any paddle boarders need to be on the lookout for rock ledges that could snag their skeg. Pedal kayaks are strongly discouraged. As always, inflatable kayaks and rafts are not allowed. Everyone must WEAR, not just bring a USCG-approved life jacket or PFD.
If you've never been to this location, please study a map or download directions prior to leaving. The last part is in a deep valley with very poor cell reception. 10:30 is our launch time, so please arrive with plenty of time to unload your gear and get prepared.
Be sure to leave some time before or after to visit Starrk Moon kayaks, one of the wackiest and best equipped kayak stores on earth.
There's a better than likely chance that we'll visit Bonkey's ice cream or Slate Farm Brewery afterwards... or possibly both!
