The Mighty Connecticut River has its origin in the northern woods of New Hampshire. On June 14th, we'll be setting out from our (drive-to) campsite at Champion Meadows Campground in West Stewartstown NH. (See 44.992977657713915, -71.53574001528337 for location.) From there, we'll paddle and follow the current down to Colebrook NH or beyond.
This section of river resembles the North Conway section of the Saco, with its sandy beaches and forested banks. Paddlers should be comfortable paddling quickwater with an occasional strainer on an outside turn.
We'll be camping at Champion Meadow Campground. Some of you may want to handle your own cooking. Or you may opt to join our meal plan that features the wonderful outdoor cooking of Chef Walter.
Some of us are planning to arrive on Thursday in order to take in a paddle starting further north on the Connecticut River or Halls Stream (which forms the border between New Hampshire and Quebec). As for me, I'll be carrying my passport card (looks like a driver's license) in case I stray over on to the Canadian riverbank. I'm not sure it's necessary, but I'll research that factor.
Kayaks and canoes are both welcome on this trip. Plan on wearing your PFD anytime you are on the river. Remember, while the calendar says that's almost summer, we will be paddling on snowmelt; the river can be chilly.
The campground is an open field with campsites around the perimeter. Arrangements can be made with Mark Rancourt (proprietor) for tenting or for siting a trailer or mobile home. Those who might not wish to camp might find accommodations nearby, or join us for Saturday paddling only.
I recognize that Sunday for the paddling weekend is Fathers' Day. So we have no paddling scheduled for that day in order to allow time to travel home.
Everyone will be wait-listed so that we can assess paddling abilities.
