Runic half month of Eiwaz begins

Eiwaz (EYE-wazh) is the fifth rune of the second Aett and thirteenth rune of the Elder Futhark. Graphically, it consists of a vertical line with one short line vectoring from the top of the ?I? down to the right at a 45 degree angle and another short line vectoring up from the bottom of the ?I? up to the left at a 45 degree angle. This rune is most commonly associated with the cosmological tree of life, the Yggdrasil. It is also associated with the Yew tree, a European native tree that is said to give off a vapor that, when slept under, could promote hallucinogenic visions. As such, it is a favored and sacred wood of vitkis (rune diviners).

Eiwaz, like its four runic predecessors, cannot be drawn upside down as it is graphically the same either way. As such, this lends to the thought of the rune representing an internal esoteric mystery rather than an outer concrete force. Eiwaz is the reintroduction of natural order into the second Aett. As the world tree is said to connect all nine worlds together, a revelation of Eiwaz in a rune reading would most likely represent a period of reintroduction necessary to achieve further esoteric pursuits, whether that be of strengthening the Will or reaching a higher level of interaction with our ancestral deities.

As with most deeply rooted trees, Eiwaz represents a natural grounded presence with a strong root system and a grand enveloping canopy. It represents a security that many woodland spirits would find homely, whether they be the ever-vigilant eagle atop the highest branch, the squirrel that winds its way through the branches or the snake that winds through its roots. Use Eiwaz to focus your efforts on what grounds you and makes your feet steady as you take your journey further along the discovery of the remaining runes as well as the next step in your personal life. This journey also mimics the twelve nights of Yule, each representing a month in the year to come.

The runic half month of Eiwaz runs from December 29th until January 12th.
