What we’re about
In the early days of my recovery, I struggled to find meaning in traditional meeting spaces. Despite being part of a strong community through my sober living home and AA/NA meetings, I felt unfulfilled. My routine was monotonous - work, meetings, sleep. As a Behavioral Health Technician, I began taking clients on outdoor excursions, which became a highlight of my week. These hikes were more than just physical activity; they were a spiritual experience. Clients would open up about their struggles and share their stories in a way that felt more authentic than any traditional meeting. Being in nature has become my foundation for sobriety.
Through guiding hikes to breathtaking mountaintops and waterfalls, I witnessed clients' recovery journeys unfold, as they found peace and spirituality in nature. Our group discussions, often compared to church, delved into the intersection of recovery and spirituality. My own spiritual growth was catalyzed by these experiences. As a BHT/CADC at a reputable recovery center in Asheville, I went on to develop a Spirituality in Recovery curriculum, exploring Neopaganism and Individual Spirituality. This ultimately gave rise to Pagan Outdoor Recovery Experiences, a unique approach to recovery through nature immersion and natural healing.
