Chainsaw Milling Workshop

Details

It's been a while, but we'll be hosting a Chainsaw Milling Workshop over Father's Day weekend. There are both single day and full weekend options. More info & tickets here:

The Lehigh Valley Natural Builders Guild is excited to offer a hands-on workshop covering chainsaw milling fundamentals. Participants will learn to select appropriate raw materials, and the principles and techniques necessary to transform logs into lumber. Logs sourced directly from Stonehedge Gardens will be made into live-edge slabs of various thickness. The workshop will cover safe tool use, milling methods, drying/storage options, and preservation techniques such as yakisugi (shou sugi ban).

Lunch break discussions will address the nitty gritty of milling your own lumber, as well as the bigger picture aspects of how this project relates to natural building, permaculture, and sustainability in general. By the end of the workshop, participants will have the skills needed to turn raw logs into usable dimensional lumber.

No experience necessary to participate.

The workshops will be led by Matthew Fallon, a member of the Lehigh Valley Natural Builders Guild and co-owner of Fangorn Forest Garden, a permaculture microfarm in Fogelsville, PA. Matt has been chainsaw-milling for over a decade, diverting trees, old lumber, and other materials from urban waste streams. He has used these materials on a myriad of rustic artisan craft projects from world flutes and drums to natural furniture and garden structures. See some past projects at Tribal Wind Arts.
