John Lennon's Music - In honor of his Birthday

The origins of this concert date back to 2014 when guitarist Russell Scanlon put together a
series of performance at Austin’s legendary Skylark Lounge in honor of John Lennon’s birthday
(October 9th, 1940).

This is not a “tribute” concert in any sense. We are not attempting to reverently recreate the
original recordings but rather to adapt John’s material in a variety of rhythmic contexts
(including Americana, Blues, Gospel, Afro-Pop, Reggae, Funk, and Swing) and to open up the
music to improvisation, reharmonization, and different styles and approaches. If this music is
to survive it must be pushed into the future—where Lennon’s attention was always firmly
focused. Indeed his entire life and career is a marvel of growth, transformation and adaptability
until his tragic death in 1980.

In addition to Mr. Scanlon on guitar, the ensemble features Bert Dalton - Piano, Alex Murzyn - Sax, Gordon Johnson - Bass, Joe Chellman - Drums, Eliana Joy O’Brien on vocals, a phenomenal rising local talent, as well as two veterans of the Santa Fe music scene.
