Kano has set out to empower makers of all ages to experiment with technology and build essential programming skills by creating the first build-it-yourself computer and coding kit. Kano launched on Kickstarter in December 2013 with a goal of raising $100,000, but the response exceeded their wildest expectations. Kano beat their fundraising goal by more than 15 times, raising over $1.5 million from 13,287 backers in 86 countries. It became the most crowd-funded learning invention at the time. They also attracted a list of notable of backers such as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple. Kano has sold more than 200,000 computer kits and employs over 70 people. Recently, Kano raised $28 million (£21 million) in funding. Kano is now embarking on a major expansion in North American retail stores. It'll now be in 4,500 stores — a fourfold increase — including every Best Buy and Target, as well as select Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Microsoft stores, and elsewhere.
