Come and idle away the winter months with Shakespeare’s Sonnets! It’s never too late to discover, or rediscover just how dazzling, intimate, and endlessly surprising Shakespeare’s incredible body of 154 sonnets can be.
Over the next three months, we’ll wander through some of the most beautiful, piercing, and emotionally complex poems ever written.
Think of it as falling in love with Shakespeare all over again one cluster of sonnets at a time.

In January: we’ll begin with The Procreation Sonnets and more: These early sonnets open the sequence and are the poems where Shakespeare urges the 'mysterious young man' to preserve his beauty, either through children or through art. Our cluster: Sonnets 1–17 (the “procreation sonnets”) plus a few key early love-and-beauty poems such as 18, 19, 12, and 14.

In February: We will turn to Shakespeare’s poems of Separation, Jealousy, and Betrayal: That middle stretch where the emotional weather changes and clouds roll in. These sonnets wrestle with estrangement, disappointment, wounded pride, and the pain of loving someone who cannot always love you back. Our cluster: Sonnets 33–36, 40–42, 87, 90–96, and the fascinating “rival poet” group 78–86.

In March: We enter the world of the late sonnets; the so-called “Dark Lady” poems, where passion becomes more complicated, desire grows knotted and sharp, and Shakespeare confronts the darker edges of sexuality and self-knowledge. These poems are bold, unsettling, and unforgettable. Our cluster: Sonnets 127–152 (the full Dark Lady sequence), with optional additions of 129 (“Th’ expense of spirit in a waste of shame”) and 138 (“When my love swears that she is made of truth”) for special discussion.

Across the winter, we’ll read, explore, puzzle over, and simply enjoy these poems together tracing how Shakespeare moves from youthful radiance to emotional turmoil to the shadowy brilliance of his final sonnets.
Hope you will make it!
