Evening zazen, seated Soto Zen Buddhist practice. We sit shikantaza, a form of zen Buddhist meditation that is objectless and embraces everything as the authentic expression of awakening. We chant the maka hannya haramita shingyo, heart of wisdom sutra and have a Buddhist study session after zazen. Every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm.

THIS IS NOT A GUIDED MEDITATION.
We sit in silence, not moving, with our hands in the cosmic mudra. A basic guide of form is listed below.

  • Position: Sit in a comfortable, upright meditation posture (e.g., Lotus, Half-Lotus, or on a chair).
  • Form: Rest the right hand in the lap, palms facing upward.
  • Placement: Place the left hand on top of the right palm, ensuring the hands are resting close to the belly (around the navel area).
  • Thumbs: Gently touch the tips of your thumbs together to form an oval shape. The contact should be extremely light, as if holding a thin piece of paper between them.
  • Arms: Relax your shoulders and keep your elbows slightly away from your body

Please do not wear hats, shirts, nor tank tops. Dress in loose comfortable clothing with no slogans, pictures or graphics. Clothing should be clean and neat.

Please follow the ceremonial forms for zazen. If you’re unfamiliar with zazen and the instructions for sitting zazen please arrive on time at 7pm for instruction. Chanting starts at 7:15 and zazen promptly at 7:30. If you arrive after 7:15 please wait until 7:55 to enter during kinhin, walking meditation.
