PASS Hannover & Torsten Strauss: Columnstore Index in Azure SQL

Details
Columnstore Index in Azure SQL – Performance and Maintenance.
Columnstore indexes in Azure SQL were developed for processing and analyzing large amounts of data. These indexes use column-based data storage and query processing, which promises up to ten times higher query performance compared to traditional row-based storage (Row Store Index).
In the talk, we will focus on the columnstore architecture including the use of dictionaries and the Vertipaq algorithm and understand how Azure SQL can efficiently query bulk data through segment elimination and partitioning. We will also understand the lifecycle of row groups and the maintenance required to ensure that query performance scales even as data volumes grow.
Torsten (MVP, MCSE, MCT) has been deeply involved with Microsoft SQL Server since the early 2000s, specializing in optimizing performance for extensive SQL Server environments. He has dedicated over two decades to working with bp as a platform engineer and collaborates closely with Sarpedon Quality Lab in his role as Principal Microsoft SQL Server Consultant.
Torsten has delivered more than 300 presentations on SQL Server performance optimization and Azure DevOps at various national and international conferences and user groups. Since 2018, he has been recognized as a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional for Data Platform. Moreover, for three consecutive years, Sessionize has acknowledged him as one of the most active speakers.
