National Trails Day Hike (AT to Compton Peak)
Details
Hike Up the Appalachian Trail to Compton Peak in Shenandoah National Park
Celebrate National Trails Day by ascending 1,900 feet along the Appalachian Trail into the northern heights of Shenandoah National Park, topping out on Compton Peak. Following the Dickey Ridge Trail downward, we'll finish by joining the festivities at the visitor center, taking in the many outstanding views of surrounding valleys and foothills. Overall, the hike will extend 11 miles over steep rocky terrain, gaining 3,200 feet of cumulative elevation.
The hike is strenuous, suitable for adults and teenagers in excellent physical condition, having recent experience hiking many hours through steep rocky terrain. Good hiking shoes with grips on the tread are essential, along with 3 liters of water and plenty of food to last about 8 hours.
The trip is a point-to-point route and will therefore require car shuttling between our finish at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center and the starting point outside the park on Route 522.
No dogs on this trip.
*We will meet at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center at 8am. Please arrive a few minutes early.
