There is a grace period or "extended" deadline in the US for filing US patent applications: it's one year after the inventor's own first pubic disclosure of the invention. This is in stark contrast with Europe, where you must file a patent application before you or anyone else publishes information about the invention. Note that there is a grace period similar to that of the US in Switzerland for Swiss design applications.
