Kids With Cameras: Fruits of Our Labor, from Field to Feast
Santa Monica YMCA
Saturday, October 2, 11:30am
Focusing on the human element, sixteen youth from Police Activities League (PAL) and Boys and Girls Club participated in summer workshops and met with local vendors, gardners, farmers and a chef to learn about how food is planted, harvested, produced and consumed as part of the Farmer?s Market movement. They were led by local photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz and supervised by City staff and PAL officers. Over a period of six weeks, the kids were trained to document their experiences through the lens of a camera, using a photo-journalistic style.
Saturday's program will include a cooking demonstration/planting workshop with Executive Chef Roberto Maggioni of LAGO, a gallery walk, a video presentation, and a youth panel.
This is the second Kids With Cameras project organized by the Human Relations Council. Launched in 2009, it advocates a different theme each year with a goal of highlighting human relations issues/themes. With these community dialogues, the aim is to bring together diverse groups from Santa Monica across neighborhood boundaries of class, race, generation and social differences to promote awareness and acceptance, exhibit their work and share their narratives with the community at large.

NPPA Protests TSA Poster Depicting "Suspicious" Photographer

DURHAM, NC (September 27, 2010) ? The National Press Photographers Association has informed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano that it objects to a Transportation Security Administration poster that depicts a photographer as a suspected terrorist.

The poster and free-standing counter cards, distributed by TSA, features a photograph of a person holding a camera, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, standing by an airport fence with a small private airplane in the background. The text reads, "Don't let our planes get into the wrong hands."

"It is my understanding that airport administrators have been directed to post and prominently display this material around airports 'one poster per entrance,'" said NPPA's general counsel Mickey H. Osterreicher, who voiced the organization's complaint to Napolitano.

Looking for a Organizer for a bicycle ride with camera photography opportunity.

This is a great meetup opportunity for those of you who would like to photograph individuals neighborhoods throughout the[masked] routes.Because of a prior engagement I will not be in the Los Angeles area on that day, that's why I'm asking for any of you would like to be organizer for our group on this ride please let me know.

In honor of our[masked] CicLAvia date, CicLAvia is running TEN top TEN listings! So far it?s been TEN reasons, TEN buildings and TEN problems. Today, we highlight TEN great neighborhoods that our initial TEN TEN TEN CicLAvia will go through.
We think that L.A.?s wonderful neighborhoods are ever-changing, fluid, loose, overlapping, and largely unofficial? but we did lean on some relatively official sources (especially the L.A. Times Mapping L.A. website, which draws from the city of Los Angeles? Planning Department.) These communities are out there to explore, but there?s often not agreement on where one ends and where another begins.
A few geeky statitical notes on population: The population numbers shown are from the LA Times website, listing the estimations for 2008. The TEN-TEN-TEN route goes through the three highest population density neighborhoods in the city of Los Angeles, and even the entire county: (in density order) #1-Koreatown, #2-Westlake, #3-East Hollywood (each greater than 30,000 potential CicLAvia participants per square mile!) The October route also goes next to two more in the top ten (#4- Pico Union and #7-Hollywood.) We?re happy about this, because it means that CicLAvia is bringing active healthy recreational space to the places that need it the most!
Also ? in this short format, there?s so much that we?re not able to capture about these neighborhoods ? let us know if you think we?ve left really imporant things out!
