PORTLAND MOVIE CLUB – WEST - MEET-UP: Spotlight on Alfred Hitchcock’s “REAR WINDOW”

Let's talk about movies! Join Movie Club Member David J. for a Meet-Up discussing Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly and Raymond Burr. One of the director’s most popular and enduring films, and also arguably one of the most popular films among contemporary audiences from Hollywood cinema of the 1950’s.

We thought this would be a perfect title for the second of our new West Side Movie Discussion Meet-Ups. Please note the change in location, as well as time and day of the week compared to our regularly scheduled Sunday events.

Here's how it works:
1. Just like a book club, we watch the movie before we meet. Then we meet for a lively and spirited discussion with socializing – getting to make new acquaintances and friends and bonding over one of our favorite entertainments: Movies!

2. We'll meet at Breakside Brewery in Beaverton at 2pm on the scheduled day & date. There should be signs for the Portland Movie Club at our table (or tables), or at the very least we will make it as obvious as we can who we are. So, watch for that rowdy bunch waving hands and wearing movie themed T-Shirts and frantically trying to save enough tables and chairs.

3. Grab some drinks and food and spend some enjoyable time discussing this (much acknowledged, in this case) masterpiece with us.

A little about REAR WINDOW:
A photo-journalist comfortable with globe-trotting excursions and living out of a suitcase is confined to a wheelchair in a multi-story apartment building. His mobility is severely restrained while he is required to rely on his occasional housekeeper and his socialite girlfriend for help. Boredom leads to spiraling theories about his neighbors – including one who may be a murderer.

While Hitchcock is famous for slowly ratcheting up the suspense for his protagonists, he also colors the story with observations about urban confinement, voyeurism, the process of filmmaking itself, and obsessively needing to take photos. “Rear Window” presents a compelling mystery while exploring the morality of the situation, a multi-layered approach which contributes to its legacy as a classic of Hollywood studio cinema, and to its continued popular appeal.

Viewing Options
Streaming options are reported to include Amazon Prime, Netflix, Google Play and Apple TV. You may even want to try Peacock as Universal owns the rights to this film. There have been numerous Blu-ray and DVD releases over the years, including recently on 4K UHD Blu-ray, so this should be easy to find for sale online or for rental at an outlet like Movie Madness.

Tips

  1. Haven't seen the movie in a while? You're in for a treat - try to watch the movie sometime before we meet. You don't have to watch the movie to join us, but it'll be more fun if you can
  2. Many of the regularly attending members casually take a few notes while watching to keep from forgetting the most interesting stuff. If you think of some interesting discussion topics while you watch, bring 'em with you!
