Join Portland Movie Club members Kyle and Aowabin for the next First Roles group discussion! This time, we’re taking a slight detour from the usual focus on actors’ first big‑screen roles and turning the spotlight toward a filmmaker’s first feature with "Songs My Brothers Taught Me" the directorial debut from Chloé Zhao — who would later win the Oscar for "Nomadland" and become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary cinema.

Here's how it works:

  1. Watch the movie on your own (or with friends!) Steeaming options include Amazon Prime and AppleTV.
  2. We'll meet at Lucky Lab at 4pm (map) There will be a Portland Movie Club sign at our table.
  3. Grab some food and drinks and we'll spend some time discussing this masterpiece with us.

Movie Spotlight: "Songs My Brothers Taught Me"

"Songs My Brothers Taught Me" follows a teenage boy and his younger sister living on the Pine Ridge Reservation as they navigate a period of transition in their family and community. The story centers on the siblings’ bond and the choices they face as they consider their futures — one pulled toward leaving, the other toward holding on to what remains familiar.

Rather than relying on plot twists or dramatic turns, the film unfolds through quiet moments, everyday interactions, and the rhythms of reservation life. Zhao’s approach emphasizes authenticity: natural performances, real locations, and a sense of emotional honesty that gives the film its power. It’s a coming‑of‑age story, but one rooted in place, culture, and the complexities of growing up in a world shaped by both opportunity and limitation.

The film blends narrative storytelling with documentary‑like realism, featuring non‑professional actors and a deeply grounded sense of place. It’s an intimate, atmospheric portrait of family, identity, and the pull between staying rooted and seeking something beyond the horizon.

After the screening, we’ll discuss Zhao’s early filmmaking style, the performances she draws from her cast, and how this debut hints at the themes and visual language she would refine in her later work. We’ll also explore how first films can reveal a director’s emerging voice just as clearly as an actor’s first role can reveal their future screen presence.
