Beginner bachata dancing class series for March ๐๐ป
Details
Want to learn how to dance the bachata with fellow single folks? Let's do it!
Bachata is a latin partner dance from the Dominican Republic that's become popular around the world. To me, it seems like a simpler, slower, and sexier counterpart to salsa dancing... and I really love it so far! Here's a video to give you more of an idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_00FjwhoXAE
The classes:
This is a 5-week series of beginner-focused classes that will happen every Tuesday in March from 6:30-7:30 pm (plus a free and optional practica from 7:30-8:30 for us to practice more) at Vitalidad Movement Arts Center (VMAC) in Portland. It costs $93 for the series.
What to expect:
- This is a totally beginner-friendly class. You won't be expected to have any previous bachata or dancing experience, and you don't need special shoes or anything.
- We'll be in a class with about 10-20 students from the general public plus the people from our Meetup group, and we'll rotate and dance with everyone.
- Note: Finding parking is surprisingly tough near VMAC and class starts promptly at 6:30, so if you're driving I'd highly recommend giving yourself extra time to find a spot, walk over, and check in.
How to sign up:
- Go to https://www.vmacpdx.com/registration.html and find "March Modern Bachata 1 (Navy)" under Tuesday, March 3. (You may need to select March 1 in the little calendar option under "Find a class" to see it.) Click "sign up" and then go through the process to create a profile.
- When you get to the part of choosing your pass, choose "follow" or "lead" based on what role in the dance you'd like to learn. Traditionally, women typically are "follows" in partner dances and men are "leads", but please choose whichever you'd like to learn in the class. For example, if you already know how to bachata dance as a lead you might want to take this beginner class a follow... or if you're a woman/non-binary person and you'd mostly like to dance with women, you might want to take this class as a lead.
- Finish signing up and pay for the class with VMAC.
FAQ: What's with the colors?
- At VMAC, they have three Bachata 1 set of monthly classes: Orange, Teal, and Navy. All of those are totally for beginners, but you'll learn different things in each class โ and you can take them in any order. If you want to move up to Bachata 2, you'll first want to take all three colors of Bachata 1.
- Note: For anyone currently taking bachata classes with the Meetup group in February 2026, that's Orange (or the bachata classes in April 2025, which was Teal)... so this Navy series won't be a repeat or anything.
