With the weather warming up, it seems like a perfect time to start exploring Portland's many beautiful gardens. I thought we could start with the Japanese Garden and I figured would be nice to do the guided tour to learn as much as possible about the garden.

We will meet by the ticket office (downstairs near the parking lot) at 10:45 am, we will walk up to the garden from 11:00-11:10 am, and start the tour at 11:15 am. The tour will take about 60 minutes.

From their website:

The Portland Japanese Garden sits in the hills of Washington Park, overlooking the city and providing a tranquil, urban oasis for locals and travelers alike. Designed in 1963, it encompasses 12.5 acres with eight separate garden styles, and includes an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood.

Throughout the Garden’s history, it has been acclaimed by a number of visiting Japanese dignitaries as one of the most beautiful and authentic Japanese gardens in the world outside of Japan.

Tickets:

  • Purchase your ticket ahead of time - make sure to purchase the 11:00 am entry on Sunday, April 5th. Tickets are $22.50.
  • Reserve a ticket to the "Public Tour" on Sunday, April 5th at 11:15 am. Tickets to the public tour are free with your entrance ticket; there are 10 spots available and they will sell out.

Parking or Public Transportation:

  • Parking by the garden is limited and depending on the time and day, it can take some time to find a spot. Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to ensure you have time to find somewhere to park (if you're driving).
  • There are several ways to get to the Japanese Garden via public transportation, including taking the Red or Blue MAX lines to the Washington Park stop (by the Zoo) and then taking the Explore Washington Park (EWP) Free Shuttle.

More information about parking and public transportation is available here: https://japanesegarden.org/getting-here-parking/

Accessibility:
The garden includes accessible paths, but some areas feature hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. A shuttle is available to transport guests from the ticket counter up to the main entrance.
