Science Pub Portland: Strange Life in the Deep 🐙 (SOLD OUT)

Details

Update: It looks like tickets are sold out now.

This event probably isn't for everybody, but whoever signs up is bound to have a bit in common. So if you're single and a little nerdy about science, nature, the ocean, cephalopods, or learning new things... join us!

Here's the blurb for the event: "Imagine spending your days in constant darkness, under crushing pressure, with little food and almost no oxygen. To humans, this seems deadly, but to deep-sea animals, this is everyday life. As it turns out, we don’t have to venture very far from Portland to enter an alien deep ocean world where animals glow to communicate, breathe without oxygen, and possess a suite of tools not just to survive, but thrive. In fact, the ability to live in harsh environments is extremely common on our planet – we just can’t always see it. In this talk, Dr. Lindgren will pull back the curtain and highlight some of the fun, strange, and amazing creatures that thrive in a dynamic ecosystem that flourishes out of eyesight in the deep waters off the coast of Oregon."

Wait, what is this event? This will be a casual lecture in the (very cool) Empirical Theater at OMSI. I've been to one before and it was really interesting.

For more info on this event, go here.

Care to join us?

  • Get your ticket ahead of time (the suggested donation is $8)
  • Let's meet up at OMSI at 6:15 so we can grab seats together, get a drink/snack, and chat a bit before the presentation starts at 7. (If anyone wants to carpool, feel free to coordinate that in the comments.)

Update: Here's the plan now that we have a big group...

  1. Let's meet up inside OMSI at 6:15 (so give yourself time to park and everything) near the Emperical Theater.
  2. Find me/Kristina. I'll wear a ridiculous sequined crown to make it easier.
  3. Introduce yourself and I'll give you a green wristband (so we can recognize folks from our group) and check your name off my attendee list.
  4. We'll head in and grab seats together around 6:30.
  5. After the event, folks could walk to a bar/restaurant to socialize more. This won't be an official part of the hosted Meetup event (I can't stay out too late), but I'm happy to help facilitate. Jerry suggested Loyal Legion (thank you!)... any other ideas?

Any questions? Comment below or message me/Kristina.

Tips for making a connection at/after the event

  • If you meet someone you'd like to get to know more outside of the Meetup (romantically or platonically), you can:
  • >>> Give them your phone number (we recommend this instead of asking for theirs), so the ball's in their court to text you later if they're also interested. You can do this in person, or via a Meetup message if their settings allow you to message them.
  • >>> Add them as a "connection" on Meetup after the event. If they add you too, you'll definitely be able to message each other. You can add 3 connections after an event (without ever paying for Meetup+). Learn more here.
  • Check your privacy/messaging settings to see if they're how you want them. You can set it to only allow "connections" and group organizers to message you, or to let all members of your groups message you.
  • Make sure to follow the Community Rules in this group's About section. These include no harassing or aggressive behavior, no messaging people you haven't met, and being respectful to fellow members and bartenders, trivia hosts, etc. If anyone violates these rules or makes you feel uncomfortable, please let the event host (like Kristina) know or reach out to another group organizer (like Max, Kevin, Cory or Erin).
