What we’re about

The Portland (PDX) Video Technology meetup is for anyone interested in the underlying technology behind video and video publishing: HTML5 video, streaming, transcoding, codecs, workflow, advertising, open standards, and more…

    Talk #1 - 6:30pm
Speaker: Aaron Kohlmeier, Senior Software Engineer @ AWS Elemental

    Beyond Timecodes: Video-Based Encoder Synchronization

AWS Elemental is working on solving a problem for customers who want to synchronize encoding of redundant sources using video content analysis when timecode is missing or unreliable. Live streaming workflows require perfect synchronization between multiple encoders for seamless failover, but many content providers struggle with timecode implementation in playout systems. In this talk, we will examine the industry challenges that led to this approach and discuss how it can be used to build live video transcoding workflows without requiring source timecode modifications.

    Talk #2 - 8:00pm
Speaker: Matthew Scharr, Senior Software Development Manager @ AWS Elemental

Prefetch or Perish: Live DAI at Scale

As viewers continue their shift towards streaming platforms across the globe, the pressure to deliver broadcast-quality ad experiences has never been higher. However, much of today's dynamic ad insertion infrastructure does not perform well when audiences reach millions of concurrent viewers. In this session, we'll dive into how real-world customer implementations of ad prefetching can meaningfully improve viewer experience and operational resilience, while also boosting ad revenue for high-profile events. We'll explore practical architectures for implementing prefetch workflows, including best practices for managing concurrent requests for both decisioning and measurement at scale. Whether you're a streaming service provider, broadcaster, or content publisher adapting to the streaming-first future, you'll walk away with actionable insights on how to optimize your SSAI infrastructure and maximize monetization potential while delivering the seamless viewing experience that modern streaming audiences demand.

Due to the network conditions still being unpredictable @ Lucky Lab, the event will likely not be streamed live on our YouTube channel. However, a recording of the presentations will be available there for on-demand replay, soon after the event.
