Improving the Fidelity of Network and Cloud Powered Media – Have We Overlooked The Media Representation Itself?

Over the past several years we’ve been researching and developing a deeper understanding of the roles Cloud, CDN, muliti-CDN, and Network infrastructure play in delivering either a great, limited, or poor media experience. One of the QoE-limiting areas reinforced throughout this work, centered on the media player’s sensitivity to the dynamic/non-deterministic behaviors of the network and the source server itself. It is well-known that improved network facing QoS leads to improved QoE. But a question remained, what, if anything, could be done from the media representation itself to effectively improve the network facing QoS observed by a media player?

This talk will share insights into our research to answer this question and ultimately led us to develop a media agnostic coding method that enables a media player to efficiently access content from multiple sources in the network/cloud. We use the term multisource coding in this context to distinguish it from today’s single source (coding) and highly duplicative approach with multiple CDNs. We’ll also share findings from active OTT service trials utilizing this method including observed gains in network reliability and performance resulting in improved QoE.

We keep talking about personalization in the video industry, but rarely does that mean personalizing the actual video content itself. This lightning talk is about creating customized viewing experiences for viewers. Can we do this in a sustainable and scalable way? Do we use manifest manipulation for it, and how about using existing standards like IMF to define what that content looks like?

End-to-End Low Latency HLS Workflows: Technology Status and Challenges for the Industry

Low Latency HLS (LL-HLS) is one the latest evolutions of the HLS specification, aiming at dividing the streams latency by a factor of three. While the promise is kept overall, some of the LL-HLS design choices generate unique challenges at multiple workflow levels, and the industry still needs to catch up with the technology on multiple aspects.

This presentation will walk the audience through the specifics of the LL-HLS technology, explain the associated challenges and identify the remaining areas of work. It will also use the example of the AWS Elemental services implementation to illustrate how to setup end-to-end LL-HLS workflows and compete with the broadcast & social networks latency.
