Talk #1 - 6:30pm
The Common Media Library (CML) and the CMAF-Ham Library - The Montevideo Summercamp Contributions

Join Nicolás Levy, the organizer of SummerProjects at Montevideo Summer Camp 2024, as he unveils the pivotal open-source contributions from the latest edition of the Montevideo Summercamp. This presentation will delve into two significant initiatives: the SVTA Common Media Library (CML) and the CMAF-Ham Library.

The SVTA Common Media Library (CML) aims to standardize and simplify the most frequently replicated functionalities across various open-source video players. By addressing common code duplications, CML has become an essential dependency for major players like dash.js and hls.js, facilitating unified and streamlined codebases for multiple functionalities.

On the other hand, the CMAF-Ham Library is a node library that enables developers to generate, modify, and interconvert between HLS and DASH formats. This library is built around the implementation of the Hypothetical Application Model as defined in the CMAF standard (ISO/IEC 23000-19). Currently in a proof-of-concept phase, CMAF-Ham is garnering substantial interest from various industry stakeholders.

During this talk, we will explore the achievements, practical examples, and the current development status of both libraries, highlighting how they contribute to the evolution of media streaming technology.

Audio Essence, Compression, and Muxing
Speaker: Al She, Sr. Staff Production Engineer @ Skywalker Sound

In this educational talk, Al will introduce audio formats and containers, present models of human audio perception and their use in lossy audio compression. He will guide us through the art of muxing audio and video tracks into a video container when audio compression is lossy and when it is lossless.

Going into advanced topics, Al will examine a specific muxing requirement: when a provider wants to submit content to Netflix, the content must comply with the Interoperable Master Format (IMF) standard. One of the IMF requirements is that the durations of image and audio tracks match exactly. Al will take a deep technical dive into the math and logic that achieves an exact match regardless of the image frame rate, and the related topic of pad/trim decisions.
