PDX VIDEO TECH 2024 #3

Details

PDX Video Tech Members!
We have a great line-up of video tech talks. If you can make it in-person, reward yourself with pizza and a beverage. This event is both in-person and will be streaming live. Doors open at 6 PM!

Thanks a lot to our sponsors AWS Elemental and Paramount+ for supporting this event!

Talk #1 - 6:30pm
Bulletproofing large live events with edge compute
Speaker: Sean McCarthy , Director, Product - Video Platform @ Paramount

Sean will discuss Paramount's use of edge compute in their video delivery workflows, focusing on two key applications: mitigating CDN performance issues and combating video stream piracy. Exploring the technical rationale behind edge computing, he will delve into its benefits and its role in supporting broader content quality and security efforts. Sean will also highlight operational visibility benefits and best practices when delivery large live events at scale.

As Sean will be presenting remotely from the East Coast, we will take this opportunity to innovate by integrating Hypersignal in our meetup video production workflow. Hypersignal is a professional contribution platform for Live Events and Broadcasters developed by our fellow PDX Video Tech friend Christoph Neumann. Thanks Christoph, it's an exciting perspective!

Talk #2 - 7:15pm
Immersive Audio Production on a Laptop
Speaker: James D. (jj) Johnston, Chief Scientist @ Immersion Networks

Immersive audio (wherein the illusion of being in a “real” soundfield is created by reproducing the auditory cues that the auditory system can detect) is becoming a new means of distribution. This creates a problem for producers and mixing engineers, as using the current set of tools, production for stereo, headphones (virtualized, with or without head motion capture), 5 channel, 7 channel, 7.x.4 channels, and other variants that have, or will appear, must be done individually, with different tools for each format.

JJ will demonstrate a system wherein producing for any output format can be done in one session, with one set of settings, and with rendering suitable for the actual playback method. There are several steps to this process. First, one must design the playback environment. Then, one must identify the source files, and from that create a mix that allows for 3D placement in the chosen playback environment. Due to venue constraints, the demonstration will be limited strictly to virtualized headphones with head motion capture, however the system can provide a high-quality output format in any form that the user can specify (number of channels, location of speakers, and the like), without further production, tweaking, or other manipulation. The “mix” can also be transmitted in an intermediate format, including the environmental design, for later rendering at an unspecified venue.

Talk #3 - 8:00pm
Revolutionizing Media Streaming: An Inside Look at Media over QUIC
Speaker: Mike English, Senior Software Developer @ id3as

Mike English, a Senior Software Developer at id3as (creators of Norsk), contributor to the open source "moq-rs" Media over QUIC implementation (quic.video), and active member of the IETF Media over QUIC (MoQ) working group will provide an overview of the MoQ protocol and some context for the motivations behind its development. Fresh from the working group's Seattle interim meeting, Mike will also give a timely status update on current specification work, followed by a demo of Norsk's experimental MoQ capabilities, and an interactive discussion. Join us for a deep dive into what may be the future of media streaming technology.

The event should be available as a live stream on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@pdxvideotech9626) but this is not guaranteed as the network conditions are always a bit unpredictable @ Lucky Lab. Check it out on the night of the event!
[Worst case the presentations will be available on-demand on YouTube after the event]
