Presented by Portland State University Center for Japanese Studies and The Encorepreneur Café.
Join us for this special evening to discuss the success of Studio Ghibli in the context of the Japanese film industry.
Studio Ghibli is known the world over for its heartfelt stories, lush animation, and memorable characters. In this talk, Dr. Patrick Terry argues that the success of Studio Ghibli is built equally on the quality of the studio and structural changes within Japan’s domestic film industry. Looking at case studies ranging from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away we will track the emergence and success of one of the world’s most recognizable animation studios.
Patrick A. Terry is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Film at Portland State University offering courses pertaining to East Asian and transnational cinemas. His PhD work at the University of Kansas addresses the intersection of art and commerce in Japan’s domestic film industry from the late 1960s to early 1990s with emphasis on the collapse of the studio system and rise of independent production companies. He is currently working on articles and a manuscript pertaining to the rise of Kadokawa Pictures and their company head, Kadokawa Haruki.
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded in 1985 that has gone on to create half of the top 10 highest-grossing anime films in Japan. Hayao Miyazaki is the most prolific director for the studio and one of its founders, along with director Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. Some of the most well-known Ghibli films are My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, Ponyo, and the academy-award winning Spirited Away.
