Audience: Ready to feel empowered and confident? This isn't just another class; it's your chance to dive into the world of firearms in a supportive and encouraging environment designed specifically for first time, limited experience or advanced individuals. We'll start with the essentials, building a solid foundation of firearm safety and responsible handling. Then comes the exciting part – getting hands-on experience with a variety of different firearms. You'll discover what feels right for you, gain practical skills, and leave with a newfound sense of capability. Let's unlock your inner marksman!
Course Duration & Range Fee: Plan for 1 1/2-hours of training/instruction range time and gun cleaning. Based on the instructor's preference and student needs. Fee $50.00 Bring your own firearm pay a range fee- $10.00
Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate safe firearm handling procedures (loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions).
  • Identify the basic parts and functions of a handgun.
  • Assume a proper shooting stance and grip.
  • Demonstrate proper sight alignment and sight picture.
  • Fire a handgun safely and accurately at short distances.

Materials:

  • Firearm Safety Handout- handgun parts, & fundamentals
  • Eye & Ear Protection (provided)
  • Revolver / Semi-automatic handguns (appropriate for beginners)
  • Ammunition (instructor will provide a safe amount) & Targets

Lesson Plan:
Part 1: Instruction

  1. Introductions & Release Form
  2. Review Pre Course Safety Rules and Safety Protocols.
  3. Icebreaker Activity (e.g., why are you interested in learning to shoot?)
  4. Firearm Safety:
  • Emphasize the four cardinal rules of firearm safety:
  • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
  • Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot.
  • Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
  • Discuss safe gun handling procedures: loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions.
  • Explain the importance of maintaining situational awareness and keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Part 2. Handgun Knowledge:

  • Introduce the basic parts and functions of a handgun (slide, frame, barrel, grip, magazine, sights, trigger, safety).
  • Explain the difference between revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.
  • Discuss ammunition types (optional).

Part 3: Range Time
1. Range Safety Briefing:

  • Review cardinal rules & range safety protocols.
  • Explain proper etiquette on the firing line (e.g., only handle firearms when your turn to shoot, communicate clearly with the instructor).
  • 2. With unloaded firearms, have students practice safe handling procedures under the instructor's supervision.
  • Instructors can demonstrate proper grip, stance, sight alignment, and sight picture.
  • 3. Dry Firing:
  • Students practice trigger control and sight alignment with unloaded firearms.
  • 4. Live Fire:
  • Students begin shooting at close distances (3-5 yards) under close instructor supervision.
  • The instructor will monitor each student's technique and provide personalized feedback.
  • Start with a limited number of rounds and gradually increase as comfort and skill level improve.
  1. EOM, PMCS & Wrap-Up / Q&A:
  • Answer any questions students may have.
  • Briefly clean and complete maintenance procedures (optional).
  • Provide information on additional resources for continued learning (e.g., shooting clubs, further training courses).

Safety Considerations:

  • Safety is paramount. I prioritize a safe & controlled learning environment at all times.
  • Only keep the firearm pointed downrange when on the firing line.
  • Instructor maintains control of the firearms until they are handed to students for supervised shooting.
