"Encounter groups are the interpersonal equivalent of skydiving. They are high-risk, high adrenaline endeavors, partially controlled, semi-regulated surprises. All participants share some idea of what will will unfold, bet there is sufficient ignorance of the details to lend qualities of mystery and uneasy adventure into the unknown of self and others.

The encounter movement exists largely outside the traditional help-giving institutions of society. Its strong egalitarian and anti-intellectual overtones may represent a reaction against many of the traditional institutional forms of help-giving and the dependence on the professional help-giver.
