Historically and in modern times religious zealots have frequently eyed off taking over the apparatuses of the state. We argue that this should be resisted, that there should be a separation of religion from the state: it's about power, tyranny, and human rights. It's a philosophy and a jurisprudence principle. It includes: no state religion, incorporates pluralism, secularism, freedom of and from religion. After centuries of power struggles, bloodshed and religious persecution in Europe between Catholics and Protestants, the idea occurred to impose stringent checks on the religions of the day and their power over the state.
As atheists we support and applaud all efforts to separate religious entities from controlling the state, be it in Australia, the US, Israel, Saudi or Iran.
